Looking over Mark's latest comic got me thinking - here in the UK lots of people used to have two large furry die hanging in their cars beneath their rear view mirrors in the centre of the windscreen in their cars. I think it was a fad that came and went and ever since it's been a bit of a joke that they aren't very tasteful.

I remember a scene from the British sitcom "Red Dwarf" where they described all the things that had gone wrong after a bad crash with one of their space ships, and they listed what had gone wrong including that that the string on the furry dice had snapped - when a character asked them to sum up all the damage they responded "well basically you've got a more tasteful ship" Cheesy

Is this a universal global joke or is it quite local?

Our dice in the US aren't furry - they're fuzzy Smiley

Large red fuzzy dice hanging on the rear-view mirror is a sign in the US of one of two things. 1) You still think it's the 70's and it's COOOL Smiley or 2) You fully expect all things to come back into style and you're just waiting patiently for that to swing back around...

Yeah, its a joke here as well - a sign that you should be back in the 80's with your mullet style haircut and acid wash jeans Grin

*Looks affronted* .... there's absolutely nothing wrong with having furry dice in the car ... they go very nicely with the nodding dog on the rear parcel shelf!! Shocked

Only kidding Tongue
Seriously though, they're the kind of items which are soooo naff they're good and I confess to having a very small pair of dice hanging in my car ... but they're the fragranced sort so there's a nice smell in there when I get in to drive. Wink
Now all I need is the nodding dog .... he he

Secret Santa make note! Although if it was me, you'd be getting a nodding kangaroo/koala/wombat/emu set instead Wink

These lovely items also serve another function.  It's every parent's right to mortally embarrass their children! Wink

Says the woman who doesn't yet have kids! Cheesy  It'll be payback for every time they've embarrassed me in public -- everything from the occasional temper tantrum to passing gas in a crowded aisle and telling everyone it was me.  Last summer, while grocery shopping, my son sang four or five rousing renditions of "Happy Birthday" (it really was my birthday) as we went through the store.  I had all sorts of people approach me, saying things like, "Oh, so you're the one with the birthday!"

It may be "spirit" to you, but for me it's caused a not-so-slow decent into madness! Wink I plan to show them my "spirit" when they're teenagers -- dropping them off at school while wearing a purple plaid shirt with orange striped pants; public displays of affection with their father in front of their friends; maybe a "Honk if you love Harry Potter" bumper sticker on the car.  Ah, sweet revenge!

The ones I have are tasteful leopard spotted dice on a nice piece of boingy elastic! Cool
I've got a wee scented teddy bear to put out when the dice stop smelling and I must get the nodding dog out of storage too. Grin

There's a car parked a few doors away which has black and white splodged car seat covers and HUGE black and white dice hanging from the rear view mirror .... it's the same colour scheme with the steering wheel cover and even the carpets from what I can see. There are accents of flurorescent pink on the cushions on the back seat and a bright pink Ermintrude-style cow on the dashboard. Cool
The car looks like a large black and white cow on wheels!! Roll Eyes

~*~

I can't WAIT for mine to start giving me grief when he hits his teens, because I've got some fab embarrassing photos to threaten to show to people if he doesn't behave! Cool He has no idea where they are either which is even better .. *mwahahaha!!*
I think I tend more towards kbmum's viewpoint over the revenge and havoc we could cause when they start to play up ~ you GO for it girl!! Grin
