Here in Wellington I work for the biggest cinema in the area (well I just started last week). I often work ticket box.
Since Weta employees get a discount (NZ $2 off) they show their "Weta ID".
When this happens I sometimes ask what they do at Weta. Tonight there was a woman who did computer stuff and then three guys that all did digital computer stuff as well. I told them I thought that was really cool, that I was a big PJ/LOTR fan. I also mentioned that if I had had my autograph book (which I will next time) I would have asked for their autograph. They were like "oh you should get the actors". I told them that I had but that I wanted behind the scenes people as well since what they did was equally as important and that they did a fantastic job. They were pleasantly surprised and said that no one had ever given them a compliment. We proceeded to have a quick discussion about the importance of their work--i.e. without them it would be the actors and a green screen background. They were super friendly and cool.

I guess their comment about never having got a compliment really struck me. These are the people who will never be at conventions, meeting other fans like me who value their work. The movies could not have been made without them yet they will never get the public accolades and compliments that the others do.
Next time I meet one of them I will definitely remember to thank them for their hard work, on behalf of myself and all the other fans.

I figured as other fans of these movies, you all would appreciate their reaction to getting a compliment and make you think a bit. I guess that's the purpose of this post Roll Eyes Any thoughts or reactions?

I find it sad that they are not more recognised for their hard work. I know this is selfish, but while I can honestly say that if I had the chance I would rather meet one of the actual actors, but I completely understand that the people who work 'behind the scenes' are equally important. Apart from Richard Taylor, all the other hardworking Weta personnel are like a faceless mass to most of the LOTR fans out there. While we admire their hard work, there are so many of them that we are not able to fully appreciate their efforts as we can with the separate actors.

The next time you see them - could you please let them know that there are many out there that really appreciate their hard work even though we don't show it alot of the time!

Hi Alyssa:

Please give my compliments to those folks as well for an outstanding job. As FTY said without those people we would have had no movie.

I was wondering if we could generate a message of thanks to those folks through The Forum like the email campaign here for Artbox. We could develop a message of thanks and appreciation to all those great people, gather signatures, and send it on to them. What do you think of the idea? Smiley

We would need Mark & Roz's help of course.

Genius Ed, we'd love to do that.

Ahh now we have to come up with something interesting to say to them Wink

I told them I thought that was really cool, that I was a big PJ/LOTR fan. I also mentioned that if I had had my autograph book (which I will next time) I would have asked for their autograph. In the meantime... they missed the film they had gone to see Wink

he hee he hee - congrats on the new job. Mark worked in a cinema for a while through Uni. He had a great time and has numerous spare posters and things and promo bits and pieces that came in - like the LOTR posters, Harry Potter postcards, and even Harry Potter "mobile" things - you know with bits and pieces dangling down from the celing.

Not to mention the free visits you get Wink - the coolest thing to do though is to work in the Projection room, Mark was doing that just before he left to get a job in IT Smiley

Back to the WETA guys, I appreciate what Jo is saying as it's the people who were on screen who you recognise and immendiately want to shake hands with and chat to. But think - these WETA digital guys worked on creating THE BALROG, THE CAVE TROLL, TREEBEARD - such well loved characters... they are certainly the "computer actors" for these parts. (Gollum is a special case who we can't really include here although they deserve huge recognition for that too).

The fact is - these guys are awesome, and they are humble. I heard that when PJ said he was too tired and was taking a sabbatical before any more movies, they contacted the guys in the UK who make the BBC TV series "Red Dwarf" to say they'd like to do the special effects on the movie that they are working on. The Red Dwarf guys giggled and said they couldn't afford the WETA folk, but the WETA folk came back saying that they were huge fans and they WANTED to do it.

Well it hasn't happened so far, Red Dwarf isn't even being filmed yet, and PJ changed his mind and moved straight on to King Kong. But it goes to show how awesome these guys are (and how much they lack vanity)

Ed, I love your idea about generating some sort of message of thanks! If you set it up Roz, we'll figure out something to say. It doesn't have to be fancy or long, just a thank you for all their hard work. Without their work the movies couldn't have been made....what an amazing job creating things like the Balrog...their hard work has not gone unnoticed and we really appreciate it... Something along those lines.

I'd be happy to get it to someone at WETA once it's done (I could also get the link put up on the TORN boards). I have no doubt that they would appreciate it very much.

Roz-
no, they didn't miss their movie. If they hadn't had a movie to catch and I hadn't had to work, I think they would have been more than happy to chat for awhile.

I worked in a cinema in the US and that helped me get the job here. It's not the best job always but it can be fun. And the free movies are definite perks--I think I prefer that to working in a clothing store and getting a staff discount because that just meant I bought more clothes that I didn't need Roll Eyes

And next time I "meet" one of them, I'll certainly pass on a message of appreciation from you all.

Thanks Roz and Alyssa! The TORN board idea is great as well. I think the folks behind the scenes deserve some acknowledgement for the huge success of the 3 LOTR's movies. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help! Smiley

OK guys, if you start to sketch out some text here whilst Mark and I re-program the petition, I'm not sure there's be much change but I'll have to talk to him about it Smiley

Any progress on this? It would have been so cool to have had something for Alyssa to give to Weta when she was just at their facility! I wish we knew sooner that she was going and maybe we could have come up with something for her to present to them.
