I was debating on getting my husband SOCOM or SOCOM II as part of his b-day gift. I was told you do not need to have played the first one to play the second one and that the second one is much better and a great game. Any opinions? As I just won SOCOM II on eBay, used, for $5.50 plus shipping ($3).

I have played both SOCOM games on the PS2 and loved them both. The first SOCOM was excellent but the developers improved the gameplay and team member actions so they are not as stupid in the second version. Your team would make some strange tactical moves and get in your line of fire many times. I think you got a great deal on the game and your husband will enjoy it very much!

Thanks Savage!! So you think the single player mode is good too? And you are aying that they are both fairly the same (Socom 1 and 2) but the second one just has some improvements, so it is slightly better? Also, he doesn't need to have played the first one to get in to this one, right? And do we need the headsets or can he play without? Thanks for all your help. Nice to hear from someone who played them before.

I have only played the single player mode in both games but I hear that online gaming is great with both of these games. I had received the headset with the original game and speaking the commands you want to give your team was so cool and easy. You can play the game without them by issuing team commands via the keyboard but if your husband is going to play online he will need the headset. The games are different in that they are set in different parts of the world with different terrain. The second game is a nice improvement over the first but like I said I liked them both. You do not need to have played the first to play the second one.

I was reading some reviews and some people think the first one was better with single player and others think the second one is. I hear it takes up a lot of memory space though, so I need a new memory card since we don't have much space on them. I also hear that you can only save between levels, which can be frustrating at times too, but in the same sense, all these people who say these things still give them a great review. It is nice to know you played only single player, because that is all he will do as well. He is not an online game fan because we don't have great internet connection. I am sure some day that will change. So I guess he doesn't NEED the headset, but it could be fun. If he ever decides to play online, I will get it for him....or if he wants it, I will buy it, but I thought this game would be a good additional gift for him. I am just happy someone here has played them and liked them.
Thanks!

The saving between levels or missions is not bad at all so I do not think that should be a concern. Having a dedicated memory card is the way to go. I am in the same boat with a dial up internet connection so that is why I do not play online. Let me know how your husband likes the game.

Thanks, I will. I just got it, but have a general question about game discs now, so I am starting a new thread. His b-day is Monday, so I will let you know what he thinks.
