My son loves to play Pac-Man games on his GameBoy Advance.  We've been trying to find a particular game, called Pac Mania, for the PC.  We've found a couple, but they don't have the version where Pac-Man is chasing ghosts in a Lego maze.  It's a longshot, but has anyone seen anything like this?

Ever heard of emulation?  Ever heard of MAME32?  MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator and MAME32 is the Windows version.  Basically, pretty much every single arcade game, right back to Space Invaders has had all the ROM data dumped from the original arcade machines into a Zip file.  Not by the original manufacturer though, it's all been done by hackers.  You put these Zip files into the MAME directory, audit the games and away you go.  Endless credits and you can play them as much as you like on your own PC.

Now all this is highly illegal of course because the games are copyrighted but that doesn't stop people downloading them!  If you are going to play them on your PC, you are supposed to own the original arcade machine as well but how many people do you know who have that luxury?  And as most classic machines are now broken, the manufacturers have got a tough time making the whole copyright thing stick.  Nobody makes any profit from it because MAME is a free download in the first place.  It's been created by people who love original arcade games and want to preserve them.  The game manufacturers like Taito, Atari, Nintendo etc don't like it and frequently try to shut down the various ROM sites but another one soon springs up.

Now I have Pac Mania as a Zip file (it's very small, only about 255kb - don't forget it's the original arcade machine not a PC conversion.  MAME does all the decoding for you) and also the emulator itself as a zip file.  I've tested it and it works fine.  I don't know how big the emulator file is but I can send them as two seperate emails if you like.  I have about 700 games altogether, most work fine, some have missing data but if you want original Pac Man and Ms Pac Man, I have those too.

Just don't tell anyone...  Wink
