For those who have already seen this, my apologies. But for those who haven't, it's an interesting item. A little bit ago, Jo did a hand drawn Black 'Family Tree' for a charity auction over in the UK (which ended up selling for 30,000 pounds, or some such obscene amount, to, drum roll please, Daniel Radcliffe...go figure); well, for those who read the books, it has some interesting bits on it. Part pf the hand drawn family tree can be seen in this picture:

And this is onedrawn up by some mugglenet folks after seeing the whole thing, so everyone could easily read it:

So, it seems Sirius' family had some serious (no pun intended, really  Evil ) wizarding bloodline connections. The black where related by blood and marriage to the following families: McMillans, Crouchs, Malfoys, Notts, Crabbes, Prewetts, Flints, Bulstrodes, and most interestingly of all, the Weasleys, Longbottoms, and...Potters. Hm...interesting. Any of those family names sound familier?  Evil What do you fellow Potter fans think?

but any world as small as the wizarding world would involve a small gene poole

so inbreading would become a problem

and we know how that ends up

I think that explains Voldemort a few genetic flaws there Wink

Well, if you are talking about families trying to keep pureblood lines pure, then yes, but other then that (and I do like the joke, I just thought I'd actually make a serious rebutle...for once  Wink ), I'd have to disagree. Jo's stated that Hogwarts usually has around a thousand or so students in it (yeah, I can't work out the physics of that either, but Hogwarts is magical, so whatever  Roll Eyes ), which means quite a few wizards and witches go through those doors, and lets not forget that it is far from the only wizarding school in the world. So, if you are talking about the wizarding world in general, I think they must actually be quite diverse, as far as the gene pool goes...oh good lord, I can't believe I just talk seriously about this. *sigh* I guess its time to brand me a geek and ship me off to the  looney bin.  Lips Sealed

I'd love to know the stories  -- as in, "there are many stories between the lines."  Guess we'll have to wait until (or if) JK writes an HP encyclopedia after the last book is done.

I knew there was a lot of in breeding but this is dead interesting  Grin.  It is strange though that Sirius never mentioned how closely related he was to the Potters - unless I am reading this wrong Charlus was his grandads brother in law.  I wonder who Dorea and Charlus' son was - maybe James?  If it was this opens up a whole can of worms as they had not been burnt off the family tree, implying they were still more on the dark side  Evil  And didn't Sirius go and live with them when he first left home?  Yes lots of stories and we need to know them all - NOW  ROFL!
