Ahh fantastic! By any chance did you catch a train from Paddington station en route and visit the Paddington stall.

Good for you, as we all know Paddington was originally from deepest darkest Peru, and now he's been to Britain and Egypt - 3 continents so far. I do think he should accompany you on more trips. Fortunately he has a tag on him "please look after this bear", so if you lose him he'll be ok. Grin

Oh, and where did you get Marmalade in Egypt?

On a more serious note. How did you get to Abu Simbel. Did you do it in a day from Aswan? Did you fly or coach it? It's a heck of a trek isn't it?

I think a hot air balloon trip would be sublime in Northern Africa Grin please tell us more Grin

There is actually a link in the intro to P.b.'s page that tells you where i actually got him from Smiley I didn't know there was a Paddington stall at Paddington Station - figures though Smiley

P.B. also went to Bath this weekend also, but i could get any decent pictures of him against anything 'Bath'ish.

They had Marmalade at the breakfast on both the cruise boat and the hotels we stayed. The picture on the website is from breakfsat on the boat Smiley

Yeah we had the choice of flying of A/C minibus and i took the cheaper longer option (hey i have an ipod - i wasn't too worried - also the scenic route, of nothing but sand for 5 hrs) We had to go by police convoy - all long distance land journeys are now done in Police convoy after an incident back in 1997 i think?!?!? It was well worththe extra money and time though!! did you go when you went last year Roz?

hot air balloon was wikkid - thoroughly recommend it!!! it wasa shame however that the wind didn't take us directly over a temple though!!

Here's a rough iteniary of what we did:

Week 1

Cruise on the Nile
Day 1 Luxor Museum, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Papyrus Intitute
Day 2 Colossi of Memnon, Valley of the Kings, Alabastor Factory, Del Al-Behri (Temple of Hatshepsut), sail to Edfu
Day 3 Temple of Edfu (god Horus), Kom-Ombo Temple, sail to Aswan
Day 4 Abu Simbel, Felucca ride in Aswan, Visit the last steam ship operating on the Nile (The Sudan - some of you may know if from watching the movie, Death on the Nile)
Day 5 Visit Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple (God Isis), Sail back to Edfu
Day 6 Esna Temple, sail back to Luxor

Week2

Day 7 Chill and then trasnfer to Hotel in Luxor for 4 nights
Days 8-10 Visit Abydos and Dendara Temple, Visit the Old Winter Palace hotel (Again Death on the Nile), Early morning Hot Air Balloon ride across the west bank of Luxor
Days 11-13 Fly to Cairo, Visit the Grand Bazaar, Visit the Pyramids and SPhinx at Giza, Visit the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, visit the Egyptian Museum, and back to the Grand Bazaar...
Day 14 fly Home

Definitely worth the extra money. I went via coach too (we were there in Feb - it does seem like last year... it's been a long summer Tongue) and it was pretty chilly on the coach early in the morning. I think if I went again I'd fly, but as you say, that's only now I've seen the route Wink

Cool - I did this one fairly late on afternoon/evening. Did you queue to see the mummified crocs? I did ROFL! DUH!

Quote
Philae Temple (God Isis),

I still can't get over the fact that they moved all these things. Their island for this one was a bit small so it's not quite alligned up right is it?

Quote
Old Winter Palace hotel (Again Death on the Nile)

I found that a teeny bit surreal. The gardens were so lush and beautiful, it felt rather decadent and colonial Tongue did you think the same?

You missed out - stare into the face of Tutankhamun, but I'm sure you made the time Wink

Is the Egyptian Museum still all in the pink building in the centre of Cairo? Or has it moved yet?

I'm glad you had a great time Rup and packed so much in Grin

Yeah we did - nothing special really - but then there was a huge queue, so it was okay Smiley) we went pretty late to, by the time we left it was dark!! The bazaar here was really cool!!!

Its totally amazing - over 60 countries helped int he effort.... almost unthinkable to imagine how they did it all!! especially moving Abu simbel as its cut driectly out of a mountain!!

Ooh only that you missed mentioning it Wink Quite memorable Cheesy

I'm dying to go back to spend some time in Luxor and Aswan as I feel there's plenty to see around there which I could really enjoy. I also didn't make it to Alexandria which I'd love to do.

Did you hear that 1/2 the Egyptian military are permanently stationed at Aswan to protect the dam?? I don't blame them one bit!!
