Ralph Fiennes (news), who's done worse--much worse--as a sociopathic Nazi in Schindler's List and a serial killer in Red Dragon, will make life heck for the titular wizard in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.

The film, the fourth of the spell-casting franchise, is due in theaters in November 2005.

Though a veteran movie villain, Fiennes is a relative latecomer to Potter. Cameras started rolling in England on June 28. At the time, Fiennes was merely a rumored cast addition.

The two-time Oscar nominee was said to be wary of signing up for Potter duty as playing Voldemort in Goblet of Fire likely would mean committing to play Voldemort in further big-screen adventures.

The low-down lord is a key figure in author J.K. Rowling (news - web sites)'s fifth Potter tale, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, also slated to get the movie treatment. It's assumed he'll figure prominently in Rowling's forthcoming Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

By giving into the dark side, Fiennes, 41, will be the first actor to give actual weight to lightning-bolt boy's shadowy nemesis--a wizard so bad his name is never spoken by the better-tempered wizards. In the previous films, Voldemort has been nothing more than a Lucas-onian phantom menace.

Also confirmed for the Goblet of Fire cast Wednesday: Miranda Richardson, who will be on nosy reporter duty as Rita Skeeter.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, as Hogwarts stalwarts Harry, Hermione and Ron, respectively, are already back at work and shooting Goblet of Fire for Potter newbie director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Other familiar faces returning for the fourth film are: Robbie Coltrane as the imposing Hagrid; Alan Rickman as Professor Snape; and Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall.

Rowling's Goblet of Fire found a 14-year-old Harry Potter at a turning point: Halfway through his training at Hogwarts, and eager to carve out a normal life for himself. Suffice to say magic stuff ensued.

The latest Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, was still in 600-plus screens through last weekend. Since its release June 4, it's earned $244 million--the third biggest hit of the summer.

Still, the movie is on track to gross less than 2002's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($262 million), which grossed less than 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ($318 million).

Yep, I think there have been rumours of him before - where I declared him my favourite actor (and indeed much better suited for the part than Rowan Atkinson who was also rumoured!)

Mmm... Ralph Fiennes... I reckon he will be great, though I am sure I should not be drooling over Voldemort Wink Miranda looks perfect for Rita Skeeter as well!

Viggo? Never heard of him.

But you know who I think could play Moody (if 1. he wasn't cast already and 2. JK wasn't dead set against non-UK actors) - Geoffrey Rush. I reckon he could use a similar accent to the one he used in Pirates of the Carribean - which he was fantastic in. Tied with Johnny Depp as best actor in that movie
