Jackie - what do you think? Kraken? I hope not ... there really are some huge squid in the sea, and they are supposed to get in fights with Whales (pub brawls no doubt)...

Sounds like something that should have been reported from the Bermuda Triangle

Yeah... although it's a long way from Portugal to Queensland - although 'whatever it is' has had 135 years to travel there. It could be a spoof of course, but their families seem pretty worried. Or else it's rather like that movie - Open Water:

Its very strange that they had rubber things hanging over the side, which are used when another boat pulls up... kidnapped maybe? who knows... but they are saying now that they could be in a dingy...

aahhh but there is a reasonable explaination for the Mary Celest the boats cargo pure alcohol was found to be leaking and they have assumed that the captain and his crew and family got into a life boat after discovering the leakage and opening all hatches so that the fumes could disperse sfaely they got in the life boat which they had attached to the boat so if there was an explsion they would have better chance for survival and some how the rope keeping them attach to the boat snapped and they died at sea .
this is what i had seen on a series called unsolved mysteries

Could it be possible that they tied up somewhere, (This would explain the rubber bits hanging over the side) went ashore and the boat came loose and drifted off Then they got realy annoyed and went to the pub. De Orc

lol... yup Apart from the fact that their families are really worried... unless they got shockingly drunk. I have to say I'm worried for them. McG that's really plausible - ethanol burns at a really low temp and may not have left any obvious burn marks.

I think they've just called off the search; GPS suggests that they hit some rough weather and all three were known to be poor swimmers...so looks like theyve probably drowned. though the rubber bits are still a mystery (and yes they do have a proper name, i just cant think of it right now...)

Oh... I thought I read somewhere that they were strong sailors, so to find them weak swimmers is odd. I have a pal from Montserrat who can't swim (that really surprised me, since she comes from one of the most beautiful places in the world to swim).
There was a rip in the gib (I think - the picture is a bit vague in my mind now from last night's TV), but no other real damage. I guess it's just another reminder of the power of the sea... erm.. Ocean.
How awful.
