I have been having a think about this and no matter how clever Hermione is I don't believe she planned the bag, tent etc on her own.  The evidence for the prosecution is as follows  Wink

1. The magic required to create that clutch bag was way beyond anything even a highly trained wizard could perform.  Remember Mad Eyes trunk?  That was a similar charm I would imagine and he was an Auror with a lifetimes experience.

2. Hermione says that she has modified her parents memory so that they forget all about her and trot off to live in Australia.  However after the fight in the Tottenham Court Road cafe she says that she has never performed a Memory charm.  Maybe it is me but I would have thought that a modification and a Memory Charm were one and the same.

3. This is possibly the weakest of my arguments.  How did she learn all those concealment spells and become so competent at them?  This wasn't something that could be left to chance ie she couldn't have read a book and hoped that they worked when the time came.  She would have had to have practised them over a very short period of time (since DD died).

4. The speed at which she dragged Harry away from the wedding was frightening.  She is, after all, a Gryffindor and would not have run away from a fight unless she was under strict instructions to get Harry out at all costs.

So who do you think it was?  I am leaning towards Dumbledore having given her secret instruction just prior to his death, some of which could have been the delaying tactics he mentions.  Although part of me wonders if it was Snape leaving helpful hints anonymously (as with the doe).

But she IS the brightest witch of her age... she may not have needed any help...

I'll have to think about what you've brought up though...

I reckon she would have read it in books and practiced and practiced. Although the memory thing had me going too.

No matter what anybody else says, I'm still with you on this one, Sharon!

Of course there could have been explanations in the parts of the book that were cut out for length. The best (weak) argument I've been given about the bag is "Dumbledore gave it to her." But I don't think there was time in Book 6 for it to appear (magically) from him, and the only item for her in the will was the book. Something that useful and complex would have cost a lot of galleons. I suppose that one of the other members of the Order could have given it to her, but I don't think they would have had a reason to think that she would particularly need it until the wedding reception.

And sure, she's the best witch of her age, but I can't see her working the Memory Charm so expertly just by studying over the summer, especially since she was kind of busy. Lockhart needed lots of practice to become pretty good at it. And Hermione doesn't usually show up as the best without book-learning and practice. (She certainly wasn't tops in DADA, and only got an E on her O.W.L.) I'd pick Ginny as the young witch with the most "natural talent" to be able to cast complex spells successfully the first time she tries.

I like your idea about Snape leaving hints, but I lean more toward an unpublished plot thread involving McGonagall. As with the Time Turner, she'd be inclined to trust that Hermione could use an artifact in a trustworthy way. And maybe there are objects that can assist a witch or wizard in casting the memory charms.

Could the bag have been amongst all the stuff at Grimmauld Place?
Just a thought ... Wink

And she was always powerful in the D.A., not to mention whatever that spell was that she cast at the Ministry in the OOTP movie, which surprised everybody (including her). Of course, she could have picked up a few style points while growing up with six older pureblood brothers, and her mother is a pretty fair witch herself.
