So when did you first start crying? I have to say Hedwig and Moody didn't effect me at all. I was a little shocked but not in the least bit tearful. I think my first big outpouring was when Harry started digging the grave for Dobby. I had just not seen that coming at all and the thought of him down the hole digging manually just hit me. And when the others jumped in and started digging, well I was a complete wreck. I think that then set the scene for the rest of the book. I got a full box of tissues and just waded my way through (the tissues and the book ). After that there were so many silly bits that set me off I told myself to pull it together. Of course then I got to Fred ....... the death and dumping him in an alcove was shocking but the scene with George stroking his hair . And then, just as an almost casual remark, you drift over the bodies of Tonks and Lupin. Well if I thought I was a wreck before, that really did me in. Throw in the return of the Marauders and I was just grateful I hadn't started reading this in public. Oh and just to show what a complete wuss I am I even sobbed at the tribute JKR gave to her daughter Jessica on the website. So please confirm that you broke down as well and I am not (as a work college described me) just a big silly .

For me, it started with Dobby's grave. But, the scene that really got me was with Harry, his parents, Sirius, and Remus. The tears started streaming, and then when Harry asked his mom to stay close to him, well, that's when the flood broke out. I've reread the scene several times and bawled my eyes out each time. I'm tearing up just writing this!

I can honestly say that I didn't shed a single tear, however the young jedi looked at me abashed this morning and said he dripped tears onto his book as he read about Harry digging Dobby's grave ... (I'm pretty sure that was the part of the book that JKR described as making her howl with tears when she wrote it.) I had no reaction to the figures accompanying Harry from the resurrection stone like you had Cindy, I expected one of the Weasley twins to die but didn't know which one so that death didn't realy bite and I think because I'd never really bothered too much about Lupin or Tonks then their deaths although shocking, didn't bother me very much. I'm afraid Sirius' death in OOTP never bothered me either ... I suppose I never cared very much about his character ... sorry if that sounds a bit callous ... Sheesh ... I must be a tough nut ... or maybe it might be because I've lost both parents and seen death for real and at close quarters, I honestly don't know ...

Jules, you arent the only one that didnt cry. I didnt either; I think because the book was sit in a situation of war, deaths were expected. I was shocked when certain characters died, but not emotional...this coming from the girl who cries watching normal tv shows!

I cried, but not for all the deaths..
Hedwig and Mad eye just happened too fast so I didnt get too emotional. I bawled my eyes out when dobby died though...so sad. I think cause it was more drawn out than the other deaths it was much more intense. I didnt cry for all the others which was a surprise cause Lupin is one of my faves, and I love Fred as well.
I was crying though when Harry went to the Forbidden Forest that was pretty emotional...then the mood lifted and I was all smiles for the final battle ccene, it was awesome...then I started crying again for the prologue, mostly though they were tears of joy to read that part.
Such a roller-coaster ride that book was. But yea I agree with Kate, some of the deaths you just kinda expected, its a war and there were bound to be casualties.

I started with Dobby. That was when it really hit me that a lot of characters were going to fie. I was a wreck. Then, Fred I love the twins, and not once did I think one would die. I was so torn about that, that Tonks and Lupin didn't bother me as much because I was still in tears over Fred. In fact, the next morning, I was talking to my sister and telling her Fred died (she doesn't read the books) and I got a little teary eyed again. lol. When Harry was walking to the forrest accepting he was going to die, I suddenly got calm and almost felt like I was accepting it too. My husband is finishing the book right now (no tears), but he did find some tear marks in the book from me

I was emotional throughout the whole book. My tears started stinging with Hedwig. Moody was sad. But I have to say that I absolutely howled at Dobby's death and subsequent funeral. I was an absolute wreck. I had to stop reading for a bit. When Harry wrapped him in his jacket, began digging his grave, and Ron taking off his socks and shoes to put on Dobby...tearing up as I type. Fred was devastating...like Cindy, I was so emotional when Harry was joined by his mother, father, Lupin and Sirius in the woods to meet Voldemort. It was a profoundly emotional scene. Like Sharon, I am so glad I was in private when I read this book. But, I have to admit, I am already concerned about seeing the film...I will be in absolute tears throughout and I'll leave the theater looking awful.

Did no-one else cry for poor Severus?
I figured he would die in this one, but I always thought it would be after Voldemort figured out he was a white hat, never thought it would be Voldemort just taking care of a bit of business - and not even killing the right person! It was sad to me that after Harry learned the truth and much could have been done about the bitterness between them, it was too late.

I didn't cry for any of the book.... I was really sad when Hedwig & Dobby died. There was not that much emphasis on Fred and Snapes Deaths. I was really disappointed with Snapes exit... was a little boring that he was killed by the Snake. I did picture him trying to save Harry and Voldemort blasting his @%$ across the room........ ah well im glad that it did end the way it did. Most people if not all of them got good closure, that is what I was mainly concerned about. Still I didn't cry even at the end of the book. I've a feeling that I will when the movie comes out...

I had forgotten about Snape. Like a few other people I thought his death was quite .... nondescript. Yes a whacking great snake taking a lump out of your neck might be unusual but I was expecting him to go out fighting. I think because I always thought he was a goodie and knew he had to die I just sort of expected it. In fact the only unexpected part was when, in the pensieve with DD and Snape, we found out that softy Severus had come to care for Harry. That surprised me but I think maybe it happened during the Occulmancy lessons when Snape saw Harry had just as bad an early childhood as himself. If they treat the deaths in this book the way they treated Sirius dying in OotP I don't think I will need many tissues

I cried for Hedwig, I mean I didn't expect the poo owl to die. Moodys death was a bit weird and I was wondering for a while if he really was dead or just captured, but the eye would mean he had snuffed it. OMG Dobbys was one of the worst, you cry that he died, you cry when he digs the grave my hand, you cry when they put there clothes on him and your cry when you read that the headstone says he lies a free elf, am just holding it together now. Fred was sad, although I knew a Weasley would have to die and I knew the most heart renching would be a twin, but it was still sad. I love Tonks and Lupin but there was just a oh by the way they are dead, think I cried, there was so much going on. The bit I cried the most at was when Harry learnt he had to die and went of to do it.

I am so sorry to bring this topic up. I just re-read it, even though it is two years old, and just wanted to say that it brought back so many memories I am practically in tears all over again. I really think I need to read this book again.
